Where Their Journey Ends, Yours Can Begin!

At convocation, students are able to reflect on their journey and what they have learnt throughout their degree. Most importantly, they get to celebrate this milestone and accomplishment with their loved ones and the amazing people that they have met along the way.

Four years can seem like a long time, especially when you are finishing up high school at 17 or 18 years old. Nevertheless, the cliché that ‘time flies when you are having fun’ is echoed by many students during their time at the University of Calgary. As you progress through your undergraduate degree, chances are you will start to see many familiar faces. Whether you are in a cohort where students will take the same classes at the same time in a semester, or just in the same faculty as others, you will be able to start recognizing a large array of your peers. Seeing a familiar face can oftentimes be comforting even if you don’t yet know their first name.

In the weeks leading up to the end of my final semester as a business student here at UCalgary, I find myself reminiscing on my experience over the past four years. I am grateful to have chosen the University of Calgary for my undergraduate degree for a multitude of reasons. One of my final classes that I am currently finishing up is Leadership Studies 501, which is a required course for students that are aiming to receive an Embedded Certificate in Leadership Studies. Although this certification is able to be gained from students in any faculty, on the first day of classes I was relieved to see so many familiar faces. Whether it was a group of students that I realized were in the same classes currently as me or a student that I had lived with in my first year when I stayed in residence.  

This course felt very full circle due to the high level of engagement required between students and it being the majority of my peer’s final semester as well. Towards the end of classes, we began to reminisce and became emotional when realizing our time at the University of Calgary was coming to a halt.  

The good news is, as our undergraduate degree ends, many students are just about to embark on their own journey. It is a time of excitement and I hope you are able to take it all in and enjoy the ride. Everyone’s undergraduate degree is unique to them as it is extremely customizable and personalized to your own desires and goals during your time at the University of Calgary.
