The Impact of Science and the Science of Impact

The 2021 Cy Frank Legacy Lecturer discusses impact science and the field of research impact assessment
Cy Frank Lecture 2021

For the sixth annual Cy Frank Legacy Lecture, Dr. William Ghali, MD, University of Calgary Vice-President (Research) and Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences, presented: “The Impact of Science and the Science of Impact” to an online audience from across Canada and beyond.

During his lecture, Ghali outlined various research assessment frameworks for measuring impact and discussed the University of Calgary's commitment to research impact.

Lecture description:

The pursuit of impact has always been an implicit objective of scientific endeavors. There is now, however, a growing societal interest in making the implicit explicit. Researchers are being challenged to concretely define, measure, and communicate the impact(s) that they are achieving through their work. In this year's Cy Frank Lecture, Dr. Ghali will discuss the maturing field of Research Impact Assessment (RIA), the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences' RIA framework, the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), and Dr. Cy Frank's pioneering contributions to the field.
