Dr. Valerie Taylor reappointed as department head, Psychiatry

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services are pleased to announce the joint reappointment of Dr. Valerie Taylor, MD, PhD, as the department head of Psychiatry. The reappointment is for the period September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2028.

Dr. Taylor is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry, a psychiatrist and researcher with a focus on innovation and developing new treatments, particularly in the area of early onset disease. She completed a Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Memorial University. This was followed by residency training in psychiatry, a PhD in medical science and research fellowships at McMaster University. She has also completed fellowships in health systems change and finance and board governance at the University of Toronto and UCalgary.

Dr. Taylor’s leads the Taylor Lab which is investigating the brain and body interface, in particular the links between psychiatric illness and the gut microbiome, and potential new treatments for mental illness. She sits on the national boards of Brain Canada and Kids Help Phone.
