Dr. Fabiola Aparicio-Ting named associate dean, Undergraduate Health and Science Education
The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fabiola Aparicio-Ting, MPH, PhD’10, as the new associate dean, Undergraduate Health and Science Education. The appointment is effective August 1, 2023.
Dr. Aparicio-Ting takes over the position held by Dr. Ebba Kurz, PhD, who served in the role for 10 years.
Dr. Aparicio-Ting is an associate professor and previous associate head of education with the Department of Community Health Sciences. She is also the director, Health & Society with the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, where she supports students, provides mentorship and oversees curriculum revision and development. She teaches a variety of undergraduate courses in public health, epidemiology, and the social determinants of health. She leads the trainee portfolio for the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, a liaison role created in 2021 to increase student and trainee engagement.
Dr. Aparicio-Ting completed a Bachelor of Science double degree at the University of Calgary, attained a Master of Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and holds a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Calgary. Her current epidemiology research interests lie in the social epidemiology of health inequities and behaviours. She has shifted much of her research to a program of scholarship in teaching and learning with a focus on public health and health science education, curriculum development and evaluation, critical thinking and interdisciplinary course development. Her work spans from local to global program development.
Since joining the CSM in 2012, Dr. Aparicio-Ting has received several teaching awards, including the Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit in 2014 for outstanding contributions to Health Sciences Education, a University of Calgary Teaching Award in 2018, and the Killam Undergraduate Mentorship Award and Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award, both in 2020.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Aparicio-Ting on her new leadership appointment.
Sincerely,
