Experts in back and spine health share latest research advances at the 2019 Wood Forum

Dr. Steven Boyd, PhD is the director of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health. He is a professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and holds a joint position with the Schulich School of Engineering and the Faculty of Kinesiology.
Dr. Ganesh Swamy, MD, PhD, is an orthopaedic surgeon and a clinical assistant professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. His research focuses on intervertebral disc inflammation, and his clinical interests lie in the surgical treatment of degenerative adult spinal deformities.
Dr. David Cadotte, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon and an assistant professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. His research interests are in advanced imaging of the human spinal cord and spinal column. He is also interested in initiating large prospective clinical trials to study the impacts of the aging spine.
Dr. Tuan Trang, PhD is an associate professor in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. As a scientist at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, his research is directed towards unlocking the mysteries of chronic pain and developing better therapies for the six million Canadians afflicted by this condition.
Dr. Greg Kawchuk, DC, PhD, is a professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta with additional appointments at the University of Southern Denmark and the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He practiced chiropractic for 15 years in Calgary before receiving his PhD in bioengineering and transitioning to academia. His research interests focus on back pain and spine function.
Mel Slomp has worked in the Alberta healthcare system for over 25 years. Currently, he is the Executive Director of the Bone and Joint Health Clinical Strategic Network team that fosters innovation in bone and joint health care by facilitating collaborative work between clinicians, patients, researchers and administrators.
Kimberley McRae competed for Canada on the Canadian Olympic luge team for the 2014 and 2018 Olympics. Throughout her 16-year career, she was a multiple World Cup medalist and earned a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships. The last medal she won was in Calgary, December 2018, while she was both competing and going to school for nursing.
