Dr. Tom Stelfox to head Department of Critical Care Medicine

Appointment effective Nov. 1, 2018

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Calgary Zone and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tom Stelfox, PhD, MD, as the head of the Department of Critical Care Medicine effective Nov. 1, 2018.

He will take over for Dr. Christopher ‘Chip’ Doig who is taking a research and scholarship leave with stops in England and Scotland for the next year. Thank you to Chip for his leadership in expanding scholarly activity, recruiting top scientists and bringing exciting new research programs to the department over the past five years.

Tom is an Intensive Care Unit physician at Foothills Medical Centre and professor of critical care medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine. He has tremendous ability to engage patients, train students, mentor colleagues and lead organizations to integrate research and innovation into health care.

Tom’s education and experience include practice in critical care settings across Canada and internationally. He has been deputy head and director of research and innovation in the Department of Critical Care Medicine since 2016. He is also scientific medical director of Alberta Health Services Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network, where he helped implement a provincial initiative to enhance evidence-informed clinical practices in patient care.

His published studies on financial relationships between authors of scientific publications, professional societies and biomedical companies, served as a catalyst for most major medical journals to implement conflict of interest disclosure policies. He also developed the first set of evidence-informed quality indicators for injury care, which have been implemented nationally (by Accreditation Canada) and internationally.

Tom earned a medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1995 and completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Toronto in 1999. He achieved his PhD in Health Care Policy at Harvard University and Critical Care Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 2004. Tom is a member of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Stelfox on his new role within the CSM and AHS.

Sincerely,
