Biography

I am interested in how soft tissues, like articular cartilage, deform in response to loading applied through daily activity. In particular, how loads we can measure at the body scale are transferred to the cells within these tissues. I use computational models and the analysis of 3D image data obtained from experiments with powerful laser scanning microscopes to explore this question. Cells allow for the maintenance of tissues in our muskuloskeletal system. Joint diseases such as osteoarthritis are thought to result from a disruption or death of the cells responsible for this maintenance. However, these tissues can last a lifetime, if the cells remain healthy. The mechanics cells experience are important to them remaining in a healthy state. I am interested in what these mechanics actually are.
